PVD Nano Black Sink Coating: A Buyer Checklist

Quick answer

A PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating is a hard, metallic thin film applied in a vacuum chamber — it is what makes modern black stainless steel sinks black without paint. A nano topcoat is a further hydrophobic, fingerprint-resistant layer. Coated sinks look premium and sell at a premium, but coating quality varies enormously between factories, so importers should check specific, testable things before ordering — not just the sample photo.

PVD vs paint vs nano coating

Feature Sprayed paint PVD film PVD + nano topcoat
Adhesion to steel Weak over time Metallurgically bonded in vacuum Same bond + sealed surface
Scratch resistance Low High (hard ceramic-like film) High
Fingerprint / water marks Shows everything Moderate Best — water beads off
Colour over time Fades, chips at edges Stable, no UV fade Stable
Rework if damaged Repaint possible Not repairable — strip and re-coat Not repairable

Six checks to demand before placing a coated-sink order

1. Cross-hatch adhesion test

The standard method is a cross-hatch cut with tape pull (ASTM D3359, commonly called the 100-grid test). Coating that lifts with the tape fails. Ask for the test on a production sample, not a hand-polished showroom piece.

2. Coverage at edges and corners

PVD films thin out at radii and edges. Run a fingernail or coin along the bowl corners and the tap ledge: colour change or bright steel lines mean a thin film where wear starts first.

3. Batch colour consistency

Black is unforgiving: two production batches can differ visibly. Ask how the factory controls and documents colour per batch, and whether they keep a retained sample of your approved batch.

4. Scratch and wear behaviour

Compare samples: drag a coin across the bowl base under light pressure. A quality film marks less and, critically, marks grey (steel transfer) rather than silver (film stripped to bare steel).

5. Corrosion resistance after coating

Coating protects the surface, but the 304 steel underneath still decides rust behaviour at scratches and cut edges. See why stainless steel sinks rust — a coated 201-steel sink fails at every scratch line; a coated 304 sink does not.

6. Packaging for coated surfaces

Coated faces should ship with protective film and foam separation, not paper directly on the surface — trapped moisture against a coated face can leave marks that look like coating defects.

Where this matters in our range

The black nano models in our catalogue — for example the Black King Kong Nano whale-style single bowl workstation — use this coating system on 304 base steel. If you are shortlisting black models, review the physical dimensions in the dimension table and compare black models side by side in the workstation sink category.

The honest bottom line

PVD cannot rescue bad steel, and a nano topcoat cannot survive bad preparation. Coating quality is a process question — ask which tests the factory runs, ask to see results on production samples, and order a pre-production sample panel from the actual batch that will coat your order. A factory confident in its line will send one without being asked twice.
